-----Original Message----- From: Massa, John S Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2008 7:44 PM To: 'peter-smith@xxx.edu' Subject: NIH Grants.gov R01 (PI: SMITH) -- CORRECTIONS NEEDED Peter Smith I made some edits to the application, renamed the file Smith-10.xfd and uploaded the new version to the UIRIS Grants.gov Uploads Page. PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THESE CORRECTION INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY: **IMPORTANT** To prevent the loss of my edits, please make your changes directly to this file (Smith-10.xfd), the one that is on the UIRIS Grants.gov Uploads page now at: http://uiris.research.uiowa.edu/ NOTE AGAIN: Do **NOT** edit your previously uploaded local copy and upload that to UIRIS because all of my edits will be lost. Always begin your edits with the version that is currently on UIRIS Grants.gov Uploads. When you have completed your edits (see below) save the file to your local drive, rename it Smith-11.xfd (or a higher number) and upload it to UIRIS by clicking the "Edit" button to the right of the record on the UIRIS Grants.gov Uploads page. Then simply BROWSE to the new file and replace the current one. DO NOT DELETE THE ENTIRE RECORD AND THEN CREATE A NEW RECORD (that is, do not start over by entering the title, deadline date, etc. again). Here are the edits that you need to complete. Please let me know via e-mail when you are 100% finished. -------------------------------------------------------------- See the corresponding section on the help page: http://research.uiowa.edu/dsp/main/downloads/gg_nih_help2A.pdf SF 424 (R&R) COMPONENT ===================================================== RESEARCH & RELATED OTHER PROJECT INFORMATION COMPONENT ##You have combined attachments #9 (Facilities & Other Resources) and #10 (Equipment) into one attachment, which you have attached as #9. You must list Facilities & Other Resources (#9) and Equipment (#10) as separate items, and attach them to their respective attachment points. Also, you used the old PHS 398 Facilities page. Note that the Pop-UP instructions at #9 say: "DO NOT USE THE PHS 398 "Resources Format Page" FORM FOR THIS ATTACHMENT" See the corresponding section on the help page: http://research.uiowa.edu/dsp/main/downloads/gg_nih_help2A.pdf ====================================================== RESEARCH & RELATED PROJECT/PERFORMANCE SITE LOCATION(S) COMPONENT RESEARCH & RELATED SENIOR/KEY PERSONNEL PROFILE COMPONENT ## Credential e.g., agency login: Your NIH Commons USERNAME was MISSING. This would have caused the rejection of your proposal on the NIH Commons. I looked up your NIH Commons username: ------ and entered it in your application. ======================================================== PHS 398 COVER PAGE SUPPLEMENT COMPONENT ========================================================= PHS 398 RESEARCH PLAN COMPONENT ## 10. Targeted/Planned Enrollment attachment: MISSING. This is a required attachment if you checked Human Subjects "YES." See the corresponding section on the help page: http://research.uiowa.edu/dsp/main/downloads/gg_nih_help2A.pdf ## 17. Resource Sharing Plan ATTACHMENT: MISSING. Start this section with "Resource Sharing Plan(s)" as the section title. (Headers and Footers with the PI's name and page numbers are added automatically by the NIH Commons after submission.) Resource Sharing Plan(s) consists of the: (1) Data Sharing Plan (where applicable), and (2) Sharing Model Organisms 1) Data Sharing Policy: All investigator-initiated applications with direct costs of $500,000 or greater in any single year will be expected to address data-sharing in their application. Applicants are encouraged to discuss their data-sharing plan with their program contact at the time they negotiate an agreement with the Institute/Center (IC) staff to accept assignment of their application as described at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/ notice-files/NOT-OD-02-004.html. Applicants are reminded that agreement to accept assignment of applications $500,000 or greater must be obtained at least six weeks in advance of the anticipated submission date. Instructions related to the data-sharing policy as it is applied to applications and proposals responding to a specific Request for Application (RFA) or Request for Proposals (RFP) will be described in the specific solicitation. In some cases, Program Announcements (PA) may request data-sharing plans for applications that are less than $500,000 direct costs in any single year. Reviewers will not factor the proposed data-sharing plan into the determination of scientific merit or priority score. Program staff will be responsible for overseeing the data-sharing policy and for assessing the appropriateness and adequacy of the proposed data-sharing plan. NIH recognizes that data-sharing may be complicated or limited, in some cases, by institutional policies, local IRB rules, as well as local, state and Federal laws and regulations, including the Privacy Rule. As NIH stated in the March 1, 2002 draft data-sharing statement (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02-035.html), the rights and privacy of people who participate in NIH-sponsored research must be protected at all times. Thus, data intended for broader use should be free of identifiers that would permit linkages to individual research participants and variables that could lead to deductive disclosure of the identity of individual subjects. When data-sharing is limited, applicants should explain such limitations in their data-sharing plans. For more information on data-sharing, please see our website at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/ policy/data_sharing/. 2) Sharing Model Organisms: All applications where the development of model organisms is anticipated are to include a description of a specific plan for sharing and distributing unique model organism research resources generated using NIH funding so that other researchers can benefit from these resources or state appropriate reasons why such sharing is restricted or not possible. Model organisms include but are not restricted to mammalian models, such as the mouse and rat; and non-mammalian models, such as budding yeast, social amoebae, round worm, fruit fly, zebra fish, and frog. Research resources to be shared include genetically modified or mutant organisms, sperm, embryos, protocols for genetic and phenotypic screens, mutagenesis protocols, and genetic and phenotypic data for all mutant strains. The adequacy of plans for sharing model organisms will be considered by the reviewers when a competing application is evaluated. Reviewers will be asked to describe their assessment of the sharing plan in an administrative note, and, normally, will not include their assessment in the overall priority score. Note: unlike the data sharing requirement above, this requirement is for all applications. For additional information on this policy, see the NIH Model Organism for Biomedical Research Website at: http://www.nih.gov/science/models/ and NIH Guide Notices OD-04-042 http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-04-042.html and OD-04-066 http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-04-066.html ## 18. If it has not been accepted for publication, it cannot be included in the appendix. You cannot use the term "person months," as you have for all personnel currently listed. "% effort" must now be expressed in "calendar months effort" (for 12-month UI appointments) or "Academic Months + Summer Months" (for 9-month appointments). The term "person months" cannot be used because it does not specify the type of appointment. For example, for a 12-month appointment: "50% effort" [OLD WAY] = "6.0 calendar months effort" [NEW WAY] For example, for a 9-month appointment: "50" effort" [OLD WAY] = "4.5 Academic months + 1.5 Summer months" [NEW WAY] See the corresponding section on the help page for additional details: http://research.uiowa.edu/dsp/main/downloads/gg_nih_help2A.pdf ##Budget Justification/Personnel Justification: Effort is MISSING for ---- The NIH SF 424 guidelines require the names and TOTAL effort (regardless of salary support) for all participants: --------------------------------------- Personnel Justification "List all personnel, including names, number of person months devoted to the project (indicate academic, calendar, and/or summer) and roles on the project." http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/424/SF424_RR_Guide_General_Ver2.doc --------------------------------------- "Key Personnel must devote measurable effort to the project whether or not salaries are requested—“zero percent” effort or “as needed” are not acceptable levels for those designated as Key Personnel." http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/424/SF424_RR_Guide_General_Ver2.doc#_Toc144091341 ---------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------- RESEARCH & RELATED BUDGET COMPONENT R&R SUBAWARD BUDGET ATTACHMENT FORM COMPONENT --------------------------------------------------------------------- FYI: All you need for electronic NIH submissions at the UI: Resources (procedures, forms, help, contacts, etc.) related to electronic NIH grant submissions via Grants.Gov at the UI: NIH Transitions to Electronic Grant Submission via Grants.Gov http://research.uiowa.edu/dsp/main/?get=electronicsubmissionnihgrants.html john -------------------------------------------------------------------- John S.
